According to The Daily Breeze, Bill Shannon, the owner of Plant Gallery & Florist in Torrance, had prepared for many hours before Valentine’s Day arrived. Even yesterday, he was trying to keep up with the demand for flower arrangements, while also bringing in four outside designers to help his two in-house specialists as well as 15 to 20 more drivers for deliveries. Shannon said business is about even compared with last year's mark, despite continued uncertainty in the economy.
Nationally, the average person plans to spend $74.12 on a spouse or significant other, up from $68.98 last year, according to the National Retail Federation's 2012 Valentine's Day Consumer Intentions and Actions survey, conducted by BIGinsight. "As one of the biggest gift-giving holidays of the year, it's encouraging that consumers are still exhibiting the desire to spend on discretionary gift items, a strong indication our economy continues to move in the right direction," NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said.
